01 Diagnostics

Fault finding and diagnostics

We isolate the circuit, trace the fault back to where it actually starts, and tell you what is wrong before anyone reaches for a tool.

Price
$140 to $260
Typical duration
60 to 120 min

Flickering lights, a safety switch that trips only sometimes, an outlet that has gone dead: these are symptoms, not the problem. We isolate the affected circuit at the switchboard, test with a calibrated meter, and follow the fault back through the wiring to its actual cause, whether that is a loose termination, a failed component or a compromised cable. Nothing gets replaced until we know what is actually broken and why.

What is included

  • Full isolation of the affected circuit before any testing begins
  • Meter testing at the switchboard and at the affected outlets or fittings
  • Fault traced back to its physical cause, not just the nearest symptom
  • Plain language explanation of what we found and what it will take to fix
  • Written quote for the repair before we proceed

Diagnostics

$140 to $260

a single circuit with an obvious symptom sits at the bottom; an intermittent fault that only shows up under load, or one that could be on more than one circuit, takes longer to trace

02How it runs

5 steps, in this order

Typical visit: 60 to 120 min. You are told which step we are on, without having to ask.

  1. 01 Isolate the circuit at the switchboard before touching anything
  2. 02 Test the circuit and the fittings on it with a calibrated meter
  3. 03 Trace the fault back along the circuit to its actual cause
  4. 04 Explain the finding and quote the fix in writing
  5. 05 Proceed with the repair only once you have approved the price

03Asked often

Before you book

If your question is not here, it is probably on the FAQ page, and if it is not there either, ring and ask.

Why not just replace the part that looks worn?

Because a worn part is usually a symptom, not the cause. We have seen plenty of new power points fail again within a week because the actual fault was upstream at the switchboard. Tracing it properly the first time is what stops the callback.

Will the power be off for long?

Only the circuit we are testing, and only while we are actively working on it. Most homes keep power everywhere else the whole time, and we will tell you before we book if a bigger job needs a longer isolation.

What if you cannot find the fault?

It is rare, but if a diagnostic visit genuinely cannot locate the cause, you are only charged for the visit itself, not for parts or repairs that were never done.

Book this service

Most non-urgent bookings are scheduled inside three to five business days. Tell us what is happening and we will confirm a time, or call now if it genuinely cannot wait.

Good to have ready

  • Access to the switchboard, or know where it is if we have not been before
  • A rough idea of when the problem started and what you were doing at the time
  • Anyone else in the house told, if we need to isolate power for part of a visit
  • Photos of the fitting, outlet or damage, if you can get them safely from a distance

  • Mon to Fri 6:30am to 4:00pm
  • Sat 7:00am to 11:00am, booked jobs only
  • Sun Closed

The phone forwards to whoever is on call after hours. Anything involving exposed wiring, a burning smell or a tripped main is moved to the front of the queue; everything else gets a call back from 6:30am the next working day.
